Community Spotlight – Nicholas Mainella

Welcome to the first installment of P1’s Community Spotlights! In Community Spotlights, we interview some of our amazing P1 teammates who are volunteering or contributing to their local communities in a positive way. For this first post, we are putting the spotlight on Nicholas Mainella, a residential installer in our Long Island branch that has been a part of the P1 family for the past 18 months. Nick is working with New York Cares to host a coat drive at the P1 branch. Here’s our interview with Nick:

blogP1: What organization do you support and what do they do?

Nick: New York Cares is a Volunteer Organization and their mission is to meet pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service. It is now the largest local volunteer organization in New York City.

P1: What is your role in the organization?

Nick: I decided to find an organization to which I could donate excess coats I have accumulated over the years that I no longer or had never used. The reason for this came after watching a news story recently about homeless and elderly people freezing to death during a near zero degree cold snap. I found New York Cares and applied as a collections site for our local branch as a way to help others in this time of need.

P1: Is there a specific event you would like to talk about?

Nick: From now until February 7th, we will be collecting coats at our local branch as well as other collection sites such as local neighbors and fire departments and then taking them to a collection and distribution site in NYC where they will then be given to nonprofit agencies to be distributed to the homeless and poor and needy. The address of our local branch is: 245 Newtown Rd, Ste 101; Plainview, NY 11803 and we are open from 9 am – 5 pm for donations.

P1: Where can we go to learn more about New York Cares?

Nick: Their website is http://www.newyorkcares.org and they also have a Facebook page.

P1: Anything else you’d like to add?

Nick: If anyone would care to donate new and or gently worn coats (please wash used coats) you can send them to our branch or drop them off and we will then package them and deliver the coats as they are received to New York Cares on a weekly basis.
