5 Things to Remember About Security System Maintenance

Having a home alarm system gives millions of us peace of mind that our homes are safe and secure whether we are at home or away. Like all home appliances they require occasional maintenance to make sure they are running perfectly through the weeks, months, and years. To help, we’ve put together a quick list of our favorite fixes to make it easy to remember.

Replace your wireless sensor batteries
A common reason your alarm system might be giving off error codes for individual zones is a sensor that has lost battery power. Make sure they are replaced with new, fresh batteries every 2-3 years for optimum performance.

Replace your backup battery
If your alarm system is displaying something like “BATT” – it’s probably because the main power backup is low. If you haven’t had a power outage recently, you should probably take down the information from your battery (a picture is even better!) and make a visit to your local battery emporium for a new one!

Secure balloons / animals
If you’ve have had false alarms, one of the primary causes is an item that is obstructing a motion sensor. This can be an animal running around the house, a sign affixed to the ceiling, or an insect or balloon moving in front of a sensor. To avoid this, look into replacing your sensors with models that are pet friendly and completing some early spring cleaning to keep the bugs out of the corner.

Call before messy activities
Dust and smoke from indoor cooking or construction can often trigger a fire alarm. Even service techs working in attic areas can cause small debris to fill the air around a sensor causing it to sound. Call your monitoring center beforehand to let them know and you won’t run into this!

Ensure your doors are shut tightly and locked
Weather is temperamental sometimes. It can cause doors to shift or open if they have not been secured properly due to pressure changes or high winds. Make sure your doors and windows are both closed and locked! This is important to both keep intruders out and to avoid any sticky situations with false alarm fines!
